Creating Havoc:
Building a Garden from Scratch

with David Lis
havochall.co.uk

Since 2009 David and Maggie Lis been busy turning four acres of pasture surrounding Havoc Hall, their 1930s home in Oswaldkirk, into a richly varied garden - open to visitors under the National Garden scheme - whose eight very different areas are home to an extensive collection of roses, herbaceous perennials and grasses.

David will be telling us the story of how the garden was made, and some of the lessons - relevant to all gardeners - he and Maggie learned along the way.

And that's not all...

To celebrate the first meeting of the season we’ll be providing free wine, soft drinks and savoury nibbles. Once we’ve enjoyed David's talk we’ll follow up with tea, coffee and biscuits and - for those who want to stay - our Annual General Meeting.

FREE for members AND non-members!

Trees through the Seasons

with Ian Findlay

You may remember Ian, who spent a number of years working for the Nature Conservancy Council in Teesdale, from a year or two ago when he gave us a very well-received talk on the flora of the area.

Now he’s back to discuss  Teesdale’s native trees - including the dale’s wonderfully gnarled junipers, the second largest population of this threatened species in the UK - along with the insects, birds and mammals that depend on them.

Seeing Stars:
Spectacular Sea Hollies

with Brian & Kathy Pike

www.eryngiums.co.uk

Sea-hollies - eryngiums - are some of the most strikingly beautiful plants you can grow, and their strange, starry blooms are a flower arranger’s dream. Far more varied than most gardeners realise, they range from tiny alpines to sub-tropical giants.

The history of sea hollies is as unusual as the plants themselves, and they pop up in all sorts of surprising places ranging from prehistoric shoes to the Tudor version of Viagra.

Kathy and Brian have been collecting eryngiums for several years and will be introducing some of their favourites, along with some attractive rarities.

Members free, non-members always very welcome at just £3.
